Assurant offers alternative to Ohio’s high risk pool

As Ohio’s high risk pool continues to accept new members, the window of opportunity to enroll on this plan closes more and more every day.  The high risk pool, which is administered by Medical Mutual of Ohio, was created as a result of the health care reform bill and is intended to provide affordable coverage to those individuals who cannot secure coverage privately.  With over $150 million in federal funding dedicated to sustaining this program over four years, the number of policies available is limited to roughly 4,900.  Therefore, thousands of high risk individuals will surely go uninsured due to a lack of funding and policies available.  Fortunately, there are other affordable options.

Assurant, which is an insurance carrier focused on the individual market, is currently offering a health indemnity program to those people who are high risk–the Health Access plan.  (An indemnity policy is different than an insurance policy.  Insurance plans are subject to state and federal laws and offer more coverage than an indemnity plan–i.e. copayments, deductibles, coinsurance, etc; whereas, indemnity plans offer reimbursement amounts to the policy holder based on services rendered–i.e. $25 for office visits, $200 for emergency room visits, $10 for prescriptions, etc.)  The Health Access plan by Assurant offers age banded rates and lenient underwriting, as you can only be denied coverage based on a limited list of conditions.  Because high risk individuals tend to have consistent medical needs (i.e. office visits, hospitalization, prescriptions, etc.), the Health Access plan provides reimbursements that can ease the financial burden of the member.
