Medical costs on the rise
Year after year it seems that healthcare related costs are on the rise. Some reasons for the increased spending includes: increased utilization of services, an aging population and the development of new drugs and technologies.
Recently, a number of stories have documented some reasons for rising premiums, including:
- A recent report from AARP says that the retail prices of the 217 brand-name drugs most used by older Americans increased by an average of 8.3 percent during 2009, the largest increase in years.
- Hospital costs are rising. The New York Times recently wrote a story about the difficulty of navigating hospital billings, which even mentions as much as $457 for eye drops. Meantime, Forbes Magazine had a story on hospital profits, which revealed that the most profitable hospitals in the country make as much as 25 cents on the dollar, and saying that hospitals that dominate their markets may overcharge patients and insurers.
