EDUCATING INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES ABOUT APPROPRIATE AND AFFORDABLE
MEDICAL / HEALTH INSURANCE OPTIONS

Are you young and uninsured? Then you need to read this!!

Young people are more likely to take risks than older people.  This is why you don’t see a lot of 50-year-olds competing in the X-Games.  But just because you’re not planning to compete in the Skateboard Big Air competition, doesn’t mean you should ever go without health insurance.

A head injury and hospital stay from a car accident could cost an uninsured individual over $50,000.  A serious case of pneumonia could set you back $75,000.  Or worse, bills from a spinal cord injury could exceed well over $600,000.  These are the kinds of situations that force families into bankruptcy and all because they didn’t have enough protection through health insurance.

According to a report by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, adults under 35 are almost twice as likely to be uninsured as adults over 45.  A staggering 27% of young adults in their 20’s have no health insurance at all, according to a recent poll conducted by USA TODAY and the National Endowment for Financial Education.

In many cases, these young adults have lost coverage under their parents’ health plans when they graduated from college.  In this economy, it could be months or more before they find a job, and then even longer before they’re eligible for health insurance-that is if their employer provides health insurance at all!

Individual coverage.  Most health insurance plans allow you to pay one month at a time, so you can cancel your policy when you get a job.  If you’re willing to carry a higher deductible you can purchase a plan with low monthly premiums.  At Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield, for example, plans for healthy Ohio policyholders in their early 20’s start as low as $40.00 a month with a $5,000 deductible.
