Help With Prescriptions in Ohio

Many people do without prescription medication because they cannot afford it.  In 2005, in Greater Cincinnati, 10.5% of the population did not receive prescription medication because they needed the money to buy food, clothing or pay for housing. 26.9% of the uninsured were unable to purchase needed medication.  Below is some information about programs to help you obtain medication.

Medicare Part D

Elderly and Disabled people who qualify for Medicare can obtain prescription drug assistance through Medicare Part D.  Low income Medicare beneficiaries can qualify for coverage with very little out of pocket expenses.

The MedShare Pharmacy provides medications at a low cost to
uninsured and low-income persons and to senior citizens of the

Ohio’s “Best Rx” is a prescription drug discount card program designed to lower the cost of prescriptions for Ohio residents without prescription drug insurance coverage who are 60 years of age or over or under age 60 with annual family incomes of less than 250% of the Federal Poverty Level which is: $26,000 (single), $35,000 (family of two), $53,000 (family of four).

Partnership for Prescription Assistance

The Partnership for Prescription Assistance is sponsored by America’s pharmaceutical companies to help qualifying patients who lack prescription coverage get the medicines they need through the public or private program that’s right for them. Many will get them free or nearly free.  A number of patient assistance programs provide help to patients who lack prescription drug coverage and earn less than 200% of the federal poverty level ($20,800 for an individual or $35,200 for a family of three).
